What’s more, there is no shortage of fish oil supplements to choose from. One of the latest is a concentrated form from the MuscleTech Essential Series called Platinum Fish Oil 4X. In this review I’ll cover some of the basics about why fish oil is so important, as well as everything else you need to know about Platinum Fish Oil 4X. Omega-3 Fatty Acids and EPA and DHA Fish oil contains the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which ostensibly have greater health benefits than the shorter chain ALA fatty acids. Platinum Fish Oil 4X does have a pretty high concentration of your EPA and DHA. Each serving gives you 736 mg EPA and 380.8 mg DHA. Omega-3 Fatty Acid Benefits In terms of improving overall body composition, one of the most promising benefits of fish oil is its ability to increase thermogenesis and boost fat metabolism. A study conducted on rats taking fish oil revealed that it may affect thyroid hormones by decreasing serum lipids and increasing thyroid signaling pathways.[1] One of the best known benefits of omega 3 fatty acids is their ability to boost cardiovascular health and prevent certain cardiovascular diseases, heart arrhythmias, and lower blood pressure.[2] Additionally, a study published in the journal CNS Neuroscience & Therapeutics shows omega 3 fatty acids are more effective than a placebo for combating depression.[3] How Much Fish Oil Do You Need? The Mayo Clinic recommends a minimum daily EPA and DHA intake of 0.3-0.5 g, which you’ll easily get taking 2 servings of Platinum Fish Oil 4X a day.[4] For best results, the directions recommend taking 1 serving 3 times a day before meals. No More Fishy Burps Platinum Fish Oil 4X is enteric coated to help prevent any fishy burps or strange aftertaste. After taking this for a couple of weeks I haven’t had any problems, so it looks the enteric coating is doing its job. I don’t mind fishy burps too much, but obviously if I can avoid them altogether that’s a huge benefit. Platinum Fish Oil 4X Price and Availability A 60 serving soft gel container is selling for about $20 at most online retailers. If you followed the recommended 3 pills a day, this breaks down to $1 a day for a concentrated fish oil supplement. In my humble opinion, the affordable price, enteric coated soft gels, and high EPA and DHA concentration make Platinum Fish Oil 4X a formidable fish oil supplement, and I would definitely recommend it.
