People understandably get scared and turned off when they hear that CLA is a trans-fat. What they don’t realize, however, is that CLA is a naturally occurring trans-fat. It is not manmade and is actually good for your overall health and body composition.

What Is CLA?

CLA stands for conjugated linoleic acid essentially refers to a family of isomers of the fatty acid linoleic acid, which is an unsaturated omega-6 fatty acid. However, the conjugated form of linoleic acid no longer functions as an omega-6 fatty acid. Instead, it has numerous health and bodybuilding benefits.

What Does CLA Do?

Most people are interested in CLA for its ability to burn fat and build muscle. Some evidence in mice suggests CLA may speed metabolism and accelerate fat utilization; some suggests it mostly fights fat by slowing the production and deposition of new fat.

Research shows that CLA slows down new fat production in young rats, so that as they age, they put on less lard than their peers do. This is obviously good news, but it’s not the same as helping overweight adults get shredded.

In a study of novice bodybuilders, although the effects weren’t very big or consistent, those taking CLA, despite a seemingly lower carbohydrate intake, gained more muscle and strength than those taking a placebo over six weeks. Equally if not more important, bodyfat did not increase in the CLA group.

Lonnie Lowery, PHD, a competitive bodybuilder and professor of nutrition, has also found in his research at Kent State University that people taking CLA suffer less soreness and less rise in interleukin-6 levels after an intense workout (interleukin-6 is believed to be involved in postworkout tissue breakdown and pain).

Data such as these suggest that CLA may be more anticatabolic than directly anabolic, tending more to preserve muscle after heavy workouts than to boost protein synthesis.

Should You Use Muscle Pharm CLA?

The nice thing about CLA is it is supported by a large volume of research. If you’re looking for a non-stimulant supplement, or just another supplement to help you lose weight and build muscle, I definitely recommend Platinum 100% Whey CLA.
